It’s no surprise that we’re seeing running shoes everywhere. After the pandemic, people are more open to putting practicality over pain when it comes to shoes, but what’s with the rise of “dad shoes”?
Athleisure has been around well since the early 2010s. We’ve seen outfits including the OG Nike Free Runs and Lululemon leggings to nowadays chunky New Balance 550s and parachute cargo pants.
Brands like Hoka Ono, New Balance, and Asics are some of the most searched shoe brands this year. These types of shoes have had explosive popularity likely due to the “that girl” trend on TikTok, the rise of the Scandinavian it-girl style (looking at you Matilda Djerf), and an appreciation for the late Princess Diana, who was ahead of her time when it came to the chunky dad shoe, bike shorts, and oversized crewneck fit.
My personal favorite take on the chunky dad sneaker trend is actually the title — I LOVE my Hokas. I actually bought them not as a piece for fashion, but rather because I genuinely needed new running shoes and these were the perfect pair for me.
I love to really get a good ROI on my pieces so I began to wear them to work with a pair of grey trousers, a baby tee, and accessorizing with gold jewelry. Work Hokas, check. Then I was like “wait a minute, let me try them with a black midi dress”, and voila. Dress Hokas, check. Now, I wear them with almost everything. Are bright-colored shoes for everyone? No, but this trend originally blew up with the plain white sneaker, so ofc that’s the most popular. But for my daring fashion girlies, get yourself a colorful pair of running shoes, and wear them … everywhere. Your feet will thank you later.
Do I support this trend? Absolutely.
